A man was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon by Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's deputies as the deputies were trying to serve a protective order, according to a release.

The Natchitoches Police Department is investigating the shooting that happened at 2:49 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 126 Second St. The deputies had gone to serve a protective order to Robert Vercher, 26, of Natchitoches.

A press release says gunfire was exchanged shortly after the deputies found Vercher, who was hit several times. Vercher was taken to Natchitoches Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The names of the deputies have not been released yet. Both have been placed on administrative leave with pay by Natchitoches Sheriff Victor Jones.

"The Natchitoches Police Department will have no further statement concerning this investigation until it is completed," reads the release.

The sheriff's office did release a statement, which contained much of the same information.

"Sheriff Victor Jones Jr . asks that we remember in our prayers all involved in today's tragic event," reads the statement.
